OUR STORY

Enshadata is Masaai for a large flat area of land. This was where it all started twenty years ago. Young and enthusiast, two young men, Paul and Timothy, ventured into Masaai land with a vision to make this beautiful flat area a model farm for its community.

Over the years, we became one of the largest cereal growers in the region, and branched into advisory and supply services, as well as trading. Our recent transition into superfoods stems from the growing challenges facing the cereal agri-sector in Africa. Declining commodity prices, rising input costs, and an increasing need to apply more pesticides has brought many cereal farmers to their knees.

With our agricultural experience and reputation in the industry, we initiated discussions with farmers around Kenya, and quickly recognised the need for change. In 2018 we conducted commercial trials for chia seeds and quinoa on our own farm, and as a result, we now firmly believe the integration of sustainably grown superfoods into Kenyan farming practices will go a long way in helping to save and improve our industry.

THE ENDASHATA DIFFERENCE

We are farmers, first and foremost.

In recent years, the lack of traceability and the difficulty chia processors experience in managing smallholder growers has lead to numerous quality issues, in particular pesticide and roundup contamination.

Since we are the farmer, Endashata can ensure traceability of all our produce and effectively control quality from farm right through to packaging and shipping. We can account for every input, and guarantee that sustainable farming practices are employed and no pesticide contamination is present. Our state-of-the-art processing facility also means we’re suitably equipped to handle the product post-harvest to ensure a consistent and quality product across large volumes.

Numerous lab tests confirm that our product is free from residues and meets European, USA, and ASEAN quality and safety specifications.

CERTIFICATIONS

Our certifications include FSSC22000 and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) for Food Health and Safety; and Control Union for Organic.

SOCIAL IMPACT

Empowering Women

Endashata has partnered with a women’s group of smallholder farmers in Endashata, Narok County. We conduct training workshops and provide farm inputs and valuable know how for qualified growers. Our goal is to share our knowledge about sustainable farming and superfoods and provide a stable market so that small scale farmers can become better growers, and in turn improve their livelihoods.

Creating Employment

Endashata has created a significant number of jobs from the entire production process of its chia seeds.

At the farm level, we’ve created over 1000 jobs in the Masaai communities we work with. The most significant impact is amongst the female members of the community, since 3 out of 4 employees are women. In Masaai land, women traditionally have less opportunity than men, especially when it comes to education and employment. Endashata has empowered hundreds of women in the community by providing employment and income earning opportunities.

At the factory, Endashata has created an additional 23 jobs for the surrounding community in Kiambu County. Regular training sessions are provided to upskill our employees and to keep abreast on the latest food health and safety requirements.

Supporting Education

We have pledged to promote Primary and Secondary education amongst the Masaai communities of Narok County by building one class room every year.

In addition we have created an annual Scholarship for the top five placed girl students entering Form One from various schools in our communities.

To date we have built two class rooms for primary schools in Endashata and Oloika, Narok County.

Sustainability

We farm chia sustainably and apply the latest technologies in agriculture. Our chia is sun ripened and non-GMO. We apply minimum tillage practices to enhance moisture conservation and prevent erosion. We also create biodiversity through crop rotation which naturally improves soil fertility.

We currently have 120ha Organic Certified and we will be gradually increasing our organic land over time.

KENYA – PERFECT GROWING CONDITIONS

Kenya is ideal for growing superfoods such as chia seeds and quinoa. Its rich volcanic soils and mild temperatures, as well as moderate rainfall and cool nights, provide the perfect growing environment. Also, dry weather during the grain filling and drying off stage is critical for superior seed quality.

OUR PROCESSING FACILITY

Our factory is strategically located on the outskirts of Nairobi in a rural setting of Kiambu County away from heavy industry. The machines are state-of-the-art and designed to process chia to the highest purity level of 99.95%. The factory is FSSC22000 certified, adhering to the latest and strictest food health and safety requirements.
