Challapata Market Update, 25.11.2014

On 23 November the price for white quinoa was 1250 Bolivianos per quintal (US$4.03 per kg) Red quinoa closed at 1350 Bolivianos per quintal, equivalent to US$4.35 per kg. Black quinoa is still traded for 900 Bolivianos per quintal (US$2.90).
In the past week rumours were spread about the Challapata market being closed, due to the current and continuing low prices of quinoa. These rumours have not been confirmed, quinoa is still traded at the Challapata market. However, it is true that most Bolivian farmers are not selling their quinoa at the Challapata market these days. Most of the quinoa currently traded at the Challapata market is from Peru. To stop the illegal transports of Peruvian quinoa into Bolivia, borders are now closely guarded.
The Bolivian Asociación Nacional de Productores de Quinua (ANAPQUI) is paying farmers in the communities 1600 Bolivianos per quintal (US$5.16 per kg) for Fairtrade Organic white quinoa and 1550 Bolivianos per quintal (US$5.00 per kg) for Fairtrade Organic red quinoa.
